& 2nd Saturday Craft
and  Vendor Markets in
Pasadena

April 18, 2018

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Pitts.

Jennifer, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Six years ago, I came up with the idea to create a market that would cater to crafters and direct sales consultants. Over the years, I had had many positive and negative experiences as a vendor and wanted to try to produce a better market.

The 2nd Saturday Craft and Vendor Market started in June 2012 under the pavilion at Burke-Crenshaw Park in Pasadena. Our first market had thirteen vendors and less than forty shoppers. The market continued there for eight months. In March 2013, the market moved to its current location, the parking lot at Parkgate Community Church, also in Pasadena.

In August 2014, I took over the Market at Five Points in La Porte (which also started in the summer of 2012). In November 2016, the market was moved to the parking lot of Asbury United Methodist Church in Pasadena and renamed the 1st Saturday Craft & Vendor Market.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The last six years have been filled with lots of ups and downs. As with any outdoor market, the weather is our biggest obstacle. Dangerous heat, icy conditions, gusty winds and pop-up storms can make our markets very interesting. Through it all, though, our vendors handle it with grace.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about 1st & 2nd Saturday Craft and Vendor Markets – what should we know?
The 1st and 2nd Saturday Craft & Vendor Markets specialize in showcasing local small business owners. Most of our vendors have been with us for several years. This gives our crafters and direct sales consultants an opportunity to build a relationship with their customers.

There are several things I am most proud of when it comes to the markets. First, we were doing this before it was the popular thing to do. Pop-up markets have become very popular in recent years but very few have the longevity that we have.

I am very proud that our vendors have formed a family bond. They take care of each other and have developed lasting friendships.

Finally, I am extremely proud that our markets are in my hometown. As a life-long resident of Pasadena, I am excited to offer these markets to our area residents.

Any shout outs? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My biggest supporters are my husband, Dale and son, Joshua. They are not only with me at the markets, but they also see all the work that goes on behind the scenes.

My family and friends have always supported the markets. Many faithfully come to each market and shop.

Of course, our markets are only successful because of our vendors. Most have been with us for several years and have seen the highs and lows.

I am very thankful to Parkgate Community Church and Asbury United Methodist Church for opening their doors to us.

I am also very blessed to have the full support of the Mayor of Pasadena, Jeff Wagner and his wife, Ginny.
